What is NVIDIA DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling)?

Deep Learning Super Sampling is a technique that uses artificial intelligence to reconstruct the rendered image. Thanks to the AI algorithms Nvidia GPUs can make games with DLSS have higher graphic fidelity while at the same time reducing the hardware’s computational load. In summary, NVIDIA DLSS  takes the image rendered at a lower resolution, typically 1080p or 1440p, and scales it up to produce a cleaner, sharper picture. Because of this, you can run your games on technically “lower graphic settings”, thus experiencing a boost to the framerate, but still enjoy a high-quality image.

Depending on the title, your screen resolution, and general game performance, you can shoes from 4 different DLSS settings: Quality, Balanced, Performance, and Ultra Performance. The lower the setting, the bigger the chance for graphical artifacts to become visible, however, the difference in frames per second can also be very noticeable. All in all, it’s surely great for gamers that more developers want to implement this technology and put their titles on the DLSS games list.

Are DLSS and RTX the same thing?

The short answer is no. NVIDIA Deep Learning Super Sampling is definitely not the same thing as RT. In fact, Ray Tracing is not even a feature exclusive to GPUs from Team Green. Graphics chips from AMD are also fully capable of using the technique. To put it simply, RT is a method of simulating light in games in such a way, that it behaves exactly like it would in the real world. For years developers were doing a great job of creating this effect manually, but ray tracing is a huge leap forward. Not only does it produce more realistic results, but it also does it in real-time with less work put into it when compared to the methods used before. The downside, however, is the fact that using this technology is extremely heavy on the GPU. But that is exactly why it’s best to use NVIDIA DLSS in games, as it’s a great way to get back at least some of the FPS lost to RT being on.

What graphics card can use DLSS?

Unfortunately, only NVIDIA RTX line products can be found among graphic cards with DLSS support. This is due to the fact that the cards have special Tensor Cores. These are dedicated AI accelerators used specifically to run the upscaling algorithms. If you’re planning on playing games with DLSS with the absolute highest framerates, you’re going to have to buy a GPU from Team Green.

Is DLSS the solution to low FPS in 4K?

Gaming hardware is becoming way more powerful with each generation. Therefore, the appetites of gamers also keep growing! Games themselves are also more complex with each release and it’s still common to get low FPS in 4K.

Can DLSS work on NVIDIA GTX cards?

Unfortunately, if your rig is sporting a GTX series GPU, we regret to inform you that it’s not on the DLSS-supported cards list. You will be unable to benefit from techniques such as Deep Learning Super Sampling and Ray Tracing. They are however still fantastic cards if you don’t plan on playing the absolutely latest DLSS games or are fine with lowering your graphics settings and experiencing video games at lower framerates
